John Gillitzer

July 23, 1936 — October 6, 2020

John A. Gillitzer, 84, of Waterloo, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, October 6, 2020 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

John was born on July 23, 1936 in Carpio, South Dakota the son of Edmond and Rose (Pueringer) Gillitzer. John served our country proudly for 18 years in the United States Navy. He married the love of his life Diane Schmidt on March 11, 1978 in Waterloo and the couple enjoyed 42 years of marriage. John was a former member of the Masonic Masons. In his free time he enjoyed gardening, bird watching, woodworking, reading western novels, scratch off tickets, and volunteering his time through charity work for St. Jude’s. He loved going on camping trips and traveling with his family, and spending time with his dogs Molly and Sasha. Above all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and will be dearly missed by those who were blessed to have known him.

He is survived by his wife, children: John (Deborah) Gillitzer; Deb Archie; Michele Klee; Mick Gillitzer; and Dawn (Jason) Schoenwetter. Brothers Roman (Delphine) and Ralph (Sharon) Gillitzer, and sister Ethel Loehlein He is also survived by a number of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, other relatives, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Jerome.

The family would especially like to thank Waterloo first responders for the time and care given to John.

A celebration of life with full military honors will be held at 1:00pm at the Garmin Nature Preserve in Waterloo with Chaplain Steve Huff presiding. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the preserve from 11:00am until the time of service. Burial will take place at a later date.

Memorials in John’s honor to Waterloo Fire and EMS Supporters INC. and/or St. Jude’s would be appreciated.
