Shirley R. Meyer

May 16, 1928 — June 4, 2025

It is with both sorrow and gratitude that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother, Shirley Robena Meyer, who left us peacefully on June 4, 2025 at the age of 97. She was surrounded by the love of her family and the warmth of a life well lived.

Born on May 16,1928 in Oxford, Wisconsin. Shirely was a beacon of strength, kindness, and resilience throughout her nearly ten decades on this earth. She witnessed and embraced the many changes of the world with grace and wisdom, and she was a middle school English and History teacher for 35 years.

A devoted wife, mother, grandmother, Shirley had a special way of making everyone feel at home in her presence. Shirley will always be remembered for the immense pride in her family, and nothing brought her more joy than seeing them grow, succeed, and thrive. Her love for her grandsons was felt every time she spoke about them, her stories spanned generations, and her passion for horses and music filled her life.

She played piano and bridge at the Colonial Club in Sun Prairie until she turned 90 and mowed 4 acres of grass on her lawn tractor she called Big Red. Shirley will be remembered for the lawn tractor rides in the forest primeval behind their house, her traveling jug of gimlets, sledding with her grandsons at the age of 80, rides in the convertible and big smiles every time we spent time with her as a family.

Shirley is preceded in death by her husband Kenneth Meyer, Brother Milton Busse, Sister-in-law Evelyn Busse and parents Bill and Inez Busse. She is survived by her son Kenneth Scot Meyer, daughter in law Erin Meyer and grandsons, Connor and Griffin Meyer, all of whom will carry her memory with them every day.

A private burial will take place at a later date where Shirley will be united with her family that preceded her in death. We want to thank Common Heart Hospice staff that have become part of our family for the past two and a half years. We couldn’t have made it through this journey without their kindness, support and outstanding care. The family kindly asks that donations be made to Common Heart Hospice in honor of Shirley’s spirit and love of life.

Though our hearts are heavy, we are comforted knowing she lived a full, beautiful life and left this world as she lived in it—peacefully, and deeply loved.
