Edith Vera Block, age 78, passed away on July 17, 2023, at Park Terrace in Marquardt Village, Watertown, WI. She was born on October 1, 1944, the daughter of Theodore (T. C.) and Vera (nee Benninger) Block.
Edith was a lifelong Lutheran who was baptized and confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church and attended its elementary school. She became a charter member when Good Shepherd was formed. She sang in the choir, taught Vacation Bible School, and was active in many other ways in the life of the congregation.
She graduated from Watertown High School in 1962. She graduated from Madison Business College secretarial program two years later. Except for summer jobs at Bethesda, she spent her entire career with General Electric working at several GE locations in the Milwaukee area. She held multiple responsible administrative positions including the last twelve years of her employment during which she managed the national placement and shipment of GE’s new medical imaging equipment.
Nevertheless, she came home every weekend to be with her widowed mother and was an active participant in the events of a large extended family. Edith retired early after a bout with cancer and purchased a home in Watertown. She enjoyed gardening, crafting, and browsing at resale shops as well as traveling widely with her brother David.
While living back in Watertown, her church work expanded to the state and national level. She volunteered with the Friends of Concordia College in Milwaukee and was a member and chair of its Board. She was an active member of the Board of Ambassadors of Reconciliation. And she attended programs at the Concordia Theological Seminary in Fort Wayne.
Edith is survived by two brothers, Robert (married to Bonnie nee Bogenschneider) of Madison and David at Marquardt Village in Watertown: two nephews, Timothy living in Princeton, NJ, and Stephen living in Verona; a great nephew, Theodore and a great niece, Kallie. She was preceded in death by a sister, Anna, who died during childbirth and by her parents.
The family would like to thank the staff at Marquardt Village, especially at Park Terrace and Common Heart Hospice, for their exemplary care of Edith.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, July 21, 2023, at Good Shephard Lutheran Church at 1611 E. Main Street, Watertown, WI, with Rev. David Groth presiding. Visitation will be held from 10:00 AM until the time of service at the church. Edith will be laid to rest at Lutheran Cemetery following the service.
