Donald G. Vehlow Sr.

Donald G. Vehlow Sr., 76, of Waterloo, passed away on Monday, April 22, 2024 at his home.

Don was born on July 17, 1947, in Watertown, the son of Alvin and Bernice (Kowski) Vehlow. He married Phyllis Poetter on November 7, 1998, and the couple enjoyed 25 years of marriage. Don was a long-time active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo, where he volunteered as an usher, greeter, coffee hour, and preparing for communion. Don grew up near the Milford Feed Mill, which he owned and operated for many years, he also farmed and operated the Waterloo Ag- Service. He served in the Army Reserve and National Guard from 1966-1972. He was a member of the Waterloo American Legion Post 233, where he was past commander and adjutant for many years. In Don’s free time he enjoyed volunteering at the Waterloo Food Pantry and Second Harvest, playing cards, fishing, gardening, cooking, traveling, and most importantly spending time with his family and friends.

Don is survived by his wife Phyllis, children Donald (Sonya) Vehlow Jr. and Brenda (David) Meyer, stepson Tory (Michele) Strauss, grandchildren Benjamin Vehlow, Taylor Vehlow, Nick Meyer, and Trent Meyer. Step grandchildren Danielle (Justin) Albertie, Colton Strauss, Taylor (Bri) Boyd, Trenna (Ryan) Boyd, step great grandson Brantley Albertie, and his brother Steve (Susan) Vehlow.

He is preceded in death by his parents and step daughter Tamara.

A memorial service will take place on Wednesday, May 1, 2024, at 5:00pm at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Waterloo, with Pastor Tim Knipfer presiding. Visitation will take place at the church from 3:00pm until the time of service. Burial will take place at a later date at Oak Hill Cemetery in Waterloo.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Don’s honor to the Waterloo American Legion Post 233, St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, or Waterloo EMS and Fire Supporters Inc. would be appreciated.
